4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 128 ratings

From bestselling dark romance author J Rose, writing under the fantasy pen name Jessalyn Thorn, comes a dark and steamy tale of secret societies, fated mates and powerful immortal beings.

Death is just the beginning.
Welcome to your afterlife.

I’ve spent my entire life in the shadows. Alone. Abandoned. Afraid. The years of mindless abuse didn’t matter to me as long as I kept my sister safe.

Until that night, when everything changed as I bled to death in the darkness. My fight was over.

Then I woke up.
Terrified, scarred… but alive.

Forced back into a body I’ve spent years longing to escape, I’m initiated into the world's best kept secret. The undead society of The Redeemed.

A motley collection of lost causes resurrected by a mysterious force, these impossible creatures have spent a millennium hiding their wealth and power.

But with enemies circling and a civil war brewing, this strange new world is teetering on the verge of collapse.

They say I’m their saviour. The ultimate weapon. All I want is to run, but I can’t abandon the two halves of my soul that claimed me the moment our eyes locked.

I’m the key to ending it all.
If I live long enough to tell the tale.

Author’s Note: If You Break (The Redeemed #1) is an urban fantasy ménage romance and book one in The Redeemed series.

Couldn't Put it Down! Love the Story
I have never read a menage book before but the fantasy aspect of this book really caught my attention. I feel like this was the perfect book to test the waters in! I had a difficult time putting it down once I started it.This book has:- Strong Female Protagonist (she starts off weak but she trains and grows)- Afterlife Secret Society- Soul Bonded/Mates- Forced Proximity- Found Family- Slower Burn- Cliffhanger Ending- MFM- SpiceLex has had a very rough life, she was scared, numb, doing whatever just to survive with her younger sister. One night she was brutally murdered but woke up in a strange place, now magically gifted. She learns of The Redeemed, an afterlife secret society and a possible war. She wants nothing to do with any of them because her sister needs her.I love how we see Lexi’s growth from being afraid to taking back her confidence. I love the sarcastic, flirty banter between the characters. I absolutely love Felix and Michael, and I swear, if anything happens to them, I'm rioting haha. I love seeing her fail, but trying again, and growing from it. But she is still human so having a few panic attacks is relatable. The two male leads, both very attractive in their own ways, compliment Lexi beautifully and vice versa. Daniel is battling his own fears but he forms a real connection to Lexi and assists her with all her power. Valentine is more chill and understanding, but we still have so much more to learn about him! He has a mafia fighting style and won't stand for anyone touching Lexi, other than her second mate.Overall, I really love this book! Some parts did seem a little easy to guess and there are still a lot of questions left. I hope that the second book will answer those questions as I really want to learn more. What is the start of The Redeemed? Why do the Vitae exist and take those after death? Why is allowing close family still alive to know of their life after death such a terrible idea? How did the siblings who are all Elders happen to all get powers after death? I'm very excited for book 2!

J Rose, writing as Jessalyn Thorn here, knows how to write an engaging, gripping, emotional story, and fantastic, complex characters.

Following Lexi’s brutal murder and her transformation into a Redeemed was both horrible and beautiful. Her character growth from the beginning to end was amazing. She has so many layers that needed to be peeled back. It was frustrating at times, she was frustrating. But the pin was worth it.

Her mates were just as complex. Both having suffered for such a long time. I can’t wait to explore more with them in the next book.

This was such an interesting world and plot. Excited to see even more of it.

I’m so excited for book two. Can’t wait to see how everything ends.

The only thing that’s ever been easy in Lexi’s life is her love and devotion to her baby sister. She’s always done whatever it takes to care for Eve until one night Lexi meets a fate she could never have predicted and wakes up dead.. yes you heard me correctly. When Lexi wakes she’s in a strange place with strange rules and she finds she’s the newest member of a secret undead society called ‘The Redeemed’.
.
This is only the beginning for Lexi as she learns she’s been gifted powers in her afterlife and not one but TWO fated mates who just so happen to hate each other.. Daniel and Valentine have a dark shared past and they aren't too thrilled to see each other again.. lets just say that all that tension builds quite nicely.. overtime Lexi begins to long for these men who she thinks she doesn’t deserve. As she begins to fall for them, she starts hating what the fates have in store for her a little bit less. Just when she thinks she’s got all the information she can handle, she realizes both sides of this war want to use her and her gift. So in this war of life and death, who can she trust and who will betray her?..

She's done it again!

The pain, the angst, the heartbreak. The men...all had me turning the page as fast as I could.

Family issues had me rolling my eyes every time I was FORCED to put this book down!

The world Jess creates is nothing short of spectacular. You get sucked in and don't even care that you aren't coming up for air. In fact you yell at your family about it.

The only problem....I have to wait for book 2....sooooo I guess I'll just read it again.

Was definitely a slow burn, much slower than I would have liked, it is single POV which I was sad about. The plot got thicker and better as it went on and there was minimal spice. Maybe 2-3 scenes total. I was very ready to DNF it but I am happy I did not because the ending was good and made me want to read the next one, and sad when I found out it’s not out yet.

I am very much a fan of the Redeemed and the Adterlife ideas and how they live on earth with the living ! Pretty freaking cool!

Warning there are major triggers in this book. Don't read if you can't handle reading about some crappy stuff going down. All in all I was very impressed with this book. It didn't overwhelm you in tragedy and make the FMC character that makes you wish you never met. It had action, love, mystery. And some sexy guys falling for what's turning into a badass woman.

This is my first book from Jessalyn Thorn (J Rose) and I really enjoyed it. I’m not primarily a fantasy girl but I do love them when I read them. This story is captivating and I can’t wait to continue. There is something so intriguing to me with a soulmate / fated mate type story and add in the MFM dynamic and I was sold hooked line and sinker!! The only thing that could’ve elevated the story for me would be to have multiple POVs because as much as we got to dive into Lexi’s life and thought process, I really missed these aspects to Daniel and Valentine. Otherwise I can’t wait for book two!!

The book has everything I'd want to read in any fantasy book. The intense chemistry, a good plot, magic, mystery, spice, and most of all, mind blowing characters. When I started the book, I literally didn’t think that I'd love it so much because you don’t get much info from the blurb. There is so much more to the story than to guess from its blurb.

A new concept of redeemed was very intriguing and mixed with a flawless writing then you get a fabulous book to read, and stick to the series until you get the happy ending. I was glued to the book the entire day to finish it up as I couldn’t put it down. It’s fast-paced and is from Lexi’s POV.

The only thing that I missed in the book was Valentine & Daniel’s POV. The absence kept me confused about what the guys are thinking and what is their role in certain aspects. I missed them but they are very strong characters who know their sh** and have so much to offer. I loved how well they supported Lexi.

The story is of a secret society where the dead are redeemed and given a second chance by Vitae. We lexi going through a tough phase and then gets redeemed and had to navigate this new world which was not easy at all. The journey was not easy for her but right where the story left off shows how far she has come and well she has developed herself.

It’s all an emotional roller coaster ride with so many factors in everyone’s lives and the things that are at stake. Nothing is going to be easy and I am looking forward to seeing the next books in the series.
It’s a 4.5⭐️ for me.

Urban Fantasy is not a genre I reach for but this author is excellent so I thought I'd give it a go. It did not disappoint. Great read and I can't wait for more.

I have very much enjoyed this author’s other works (if you haven’t read them, you definitely should), so I was excited to follow her fantasy route. Now, the premise was interesting. I liked the undead dead with some supernatural abilities within a secret world within our world. There was action, there was romance and there was betrayal. It was fairly predictable at times, and it was slow and yet fast at the same time. It’s hard to describe, but I’m sure you know what I mean.

I didn’t mind the FMC, I didn’t connect with her much, but, she was probably my favorite character. The MMCs, they were OK but I think we need to get to know them. I do like that they have their own pasts, separate and together, that they need to overcome in order to form a cohesive relationship. That growth will definitely be interesting in the next book. I would have liked to know more about the villains and how they came to be so there’s a better understanding for why they are acting the way that they are.

We are thrown into the middle of a war and it feels like there are pieces missing. This was a decent introduction, and I think that once we see motives, learn about the past, and more about this prophecy, then I will feel more invested.

This has the building blocks to be an interesting and different series. I think we just need to experience more so that we can fully immerse ourselves and understand why certain things are important. With this foundation, the next book will most likely be a good sequel. We’re left on a decent cliffhanger and I’m expecting a lot of hurt, betrayal, revelations, and events we don’t see coming.
